Getting Started with ABA Therapy

Taking the first step can feel overwhelming, but we are here to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible. Here is what to expect when you begin your journey with Inquiring Minds.

1

Identify Your Concerns

Start by listing the concerns you have about your child's development. These might include difficulty responding to their name, delayed communication, limited eye contact, challenges with social play, or trouble following instructions. Having these written down helps guide the next conversation.

2

See Your Pediatrician

Schedule an appointment with your child's pediatrician or a developmental specialist to discuss your concerns. They can conduct a screening and, if appropriate, provide a referral or formal diagnosis. If you need help finding a pediatrician, the AAP's Find a Pediatrician tool can help.

3

Free Phone Consultation

Contact our office to arrange a free consultation with one of our therapy providers. There is no commitment at this stage — just a conversation to learn about your child's needs, answer your questions, and determine if our services are the right fit.

4

Insurance Verification

Our team will help you verify your insurance benefits and understand your coverage. Insurance is not required for services — private pay options are available for all diagnoses. Most plans cover ASD under diagnostic code F84.0. Some insurers, like TRICARE, may require the caregiver to initiate the authorization request.

5

Intake Appointment

Once paperwork and insurance are in order, we will schedule your initial intake appointment. This is where we gather detailed information about your child's history, current skills, and your goals for treatment.

6

Assessment

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your child. This evaluation identifies strengths, areas for growth, and the specific skills we will target in therapy. Common tools include the VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R, and AFLS.

7

Service & Setting Selection

Based on the assessment, your BCBA will recommend the appropriate services and settings — whether that is in-clinic, in-home, community-based, or a combination. We recommend combining settings when possible, as it supports stronger skill generalization across environments.

8

Treatment Plan & Scheduling

Your child's BCBA will develop an individualized treatment plan with clear, measurable goals. We will review the plan with you so that you understand exactly what therapy will look like, then confirm your schedule for regular sessions.

9

Begin Therapy

Your child begins regular therapy sessions with their assigned team. Sessions are led by a trained Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) under the supervision of your BCBA. You will receive regular progress updates and have ongoing opportunities to collaborate on goals.
